Yikes! I forgot to give my dog's heartworm pill!

Q: I forgot to give my dog’s monthly heartworm preventative, what should I do?

A: Give the dose you missed immediately, then continue giving the medication on the day you’ve always given it. If the missed dose is more than 2 weeks late, your dog should be tested for heartworm again in six months (click here to learn why).

Want a free monthly reminder so you don’t forget to give preventatives? Try one of these tricks:

  1. If your dog is a patient at Priority Pet Hospital, log in to your Pet Portal and set up an email alert. Once you’re logged in, click TOOLS on the menu bar, then Email Alert in the Tools Links box.  Add as many alerts as you’d like–it’s a service we provide for all of our patients.
  2. Your dog’s not a patient? Why not request an appointment and get your own Pet Portal? You can also sign up for free email and text reminders at remindmypet.com.
  3. Want a DIY solution? Set up a recurring appointment or task that includes a reminder using the calendar function on your phone or email calendar.

Whatever you do, don’t forget: Give the missed dose now, stay on your regular schedule, and retest in six months if it’s been more than six weeks between doses.
